Me and my long time boyfriend are looking for places to relocate from Howard county. We rent now but we have plan to build a family and buy a home together soon. He works in D.C. and several of his coworkers encouraged us to look into Fredricksburg. We fell in love with the area but we had some concerns about the white people in the area and how open they would be to an black family being there neighbor. I have seen other black people when we were given a tour by his coworkers. We both felt uncomfortable to ask his white colleagues. We have question for the non white or interracial families. Is prejudice feelings against black people prominent in the area? And is the area moving to be more progressive (like Maryland)?

"Concerns about the white people?" You do know this is within a very short drive to Washington DC? Meaning blacks and whites live within the same neighborhoods. Not trying to sound like I'm non caring about your question but the fact we still see these on here are kind of surprising.

"The racial makeup of the city was 73.18% White, 20.41% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 1.51% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.56% from other races, and 1.95% from two or more races. 4.90% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race."

My close friend, who is black, has been living in Fredericksburg for yrs. and she loves it! Every so often I keep telling her she should move closer to DC so she/we could go out more often but she has no intention of moving. She has a beautiful home, likes her neighborhood and is on the first name basis with many of the staff at her favorite stores. If she felt any sense of racism she would tell me, as we have very open and honest conversations about race and everything else for that matter. So I don't think you will feel any prejudice in that area because of your race. There are a lot of people who live in that area work in NOVA and DC, so it's not like they live in a bubble.

Fredericksburg hates DC, only come down here if you plan on living in real Virginia, not phony NoVA. That said, it doesn't matter what race you are.

I would worry more about the long commute and heavy gridlocked traffic. There are VRE trains, but not sure how reliable their schedules are.

I mean, it's Fredericksburg. It's hard to really describe but it has a southern feel to it, make of that what you will. However, overall, the people are incredibly friendly and genuinely nice especially compared to the localities to the north of it.

I cant imagine it would be any less diverse than Howard County? As someone who lives inside the Beltway, I don't think anyone thinks of Howard as an extremely progressive place compared to areas 40-50 miles south of DC. I'd be more concerned about the terrible commute than any racial issues.

What terrible commute? People go to where the money is. Most folks do not travel to DC for work around Fredericksburg, more to Northern VA, Richmond or outside the beltway -- i.e. Quantico, Alexandria, Springfield, Tysons.
