Gathright Dam and Lake Moomaw are located in Vriginia, not West Virginia.

Cherrystone on the Eastern Shore , 11 miles or so after you go through the Ches Bay Bridge tunnel on the left. Nice place. 700 sites on 300 acres I think.

I second the Peaks of Otter and James River State Park. Otter Creek Campgroung on BRP milepost 50ish is also very nice.
If you like off-roading or trout fishing there are several primitive campgrounds West of Harrisonburg off rt. 33 just inside the WV border. It's my personal favorite in-state trip.

Otter Creek Milepost 60.8 Campground, Restaurant, Gift Shop, Visitor Center
The Parkway’s Otter Creek area provides a campground with 45 tent and 24 trailer sites, restrooms, water, and a campfire circle. Many of the campsites are along the banks of Otter Creek.
The 3.5-mile Otter Creek Trail follows the creek down to the James River Visitor Center. The trail can also be accessed from the next three overlooks to the south at MP 61.4, 62.5 and 63.1. At the visitor center the James River Canal Trail will take you to the restored James River and Kanawha Canal Lock that was built between 1845-51. When completed the canal had 90 locks and went from Richmond to Buchanan, Virginia.
Area hikes include: Trail of Trees, Otter Creek, Otter Lake Loop and James River Canal Trails.
Peaks of Otter Lodge, Campground, Visitor Center, Restuarant, and Gift Shop - Milepost 85
<FONT face=Verdana size=2>Open year-round, the 62-room lodge’s number is (540) 586-1081. Behind the lodge is Abbott Lake, named for Stanley William Abbott, the Parkway’s first resident landscape architect and planner. The 24-acre lake features a one-mile loop trail, and is stocked with smallmouth bass, catfish, golden shiners, sunfish, and blue gill. Fishing is permitted with the appropriate license.

Thanks!
I'd love to hear from other campers!

I went camping with some friends last summer in Nags Head, and it was awesome. I lost my wallet, but other than that it was great. Really nice and clean campground, too. They had grills on each lot, walkways through the dunes to the beach, and a shower/restroom area WITHOUT Port-O-Potties - real plumbing and toilets.

I will rate in order where I have stayed campground wise in Virginia-you can check them out and decide for yourself.
1. Loft Mountain Campground, Shenandoah National Park-nice summer locale, close to some of the lesser visited trails in Shenandoah.
2. Big Meadows Camp Ground, Shenandoah National Park-good, but gets crowded and often with crowds of people who are either too loud or obnoxious-better fall location.
3. Elizabeth Furnace, GW National Forest, quaint, out of the way-not much there-but plenty of woods and trails-nice trout stream.
4. Peaks of Otter camp ground-very nice
5. Otter Creek recreation area-nice location.
6. Westmoreland State Park-bug city in summer, but not bad in late fall.
7. Sky Meadows state park-another nice fall campground-rustic
8. Smith Mountain Lake-so so, depends on when you go, some crowds as of late have ruined visits.
