JESALAZ:
Tornadoes have happened in every state in the US. They don't happen in VA too often at all. My advice.... Don't move to Kansas... and have homeowners insurance for ALL possible disasters.

To our neighbors up in Va I hope it continues that everyone is alright. So sorry for the devastation and destruction it caused.
Y'all are in our thoughts and prayers.

Weather Alerts Save Lives
I think folks who live in tornado prone areas should have weather radios to keep them informed of potential tornadoes. I know Mondays' storm was predicted about 10 minutes before the tornado touched down. I don't live in the Suffolk area but I hope the local authorities are smart enough to have sirens or message alerts to avoid loss of life. It was a miracle no ne died from this major tornado!!

Keep in mind that tornados of this magnitude are very much an exception to the rule. I'm sure someone here can provide the statistics. The closer your are to the mountains the less likely tornados are. We do get those strong "downdraft" winds that can be very destructive though.
Does anyone know what "F" number was assigned to the Suffolk tornados?

All parts of Virginia are susceptable to tornados/cyclones. The cyclone that hit Rye Cove way back when is evidence of that fact. It killed if I am not mistaken 12 school children and 1 teacher and completely distroyed the Rye Cove School. This cyclone occured in Rye Cove, Scott County, Virginia in May of 1929. Although Tornados/cyclones do happen they have a tendancy to be much more rare than occurances in tornado alley. But remember they do occur in Virginia and there is no place that is completely free and clear of potential tornado/cyclone occurances.
You can visit Rye Cove-KpT for more information regarding the Cyclone of Rye Cove. Please note - There is a typo in one of the pages, as I understand it this occured in 1929 not 1829
A. P. Carter--leader of the famous country music group, the Carter Family, and a prolific songwriter--was in the next valley on the day of the storm. He rushed to Rye Cove to help with the rescue efforts. Carter was touched by the horror of what he saw and soon composed "The Cyclone of Rye Cove." You can read the whole story at Deathly Lyrics: Cyclone of Rye Cove and hear the Carter Family recording at the Blueridge Institute and Museum.
Just a little history, hope that you enjoy and find it interesting.
