weekend cabin rental wanted in nice town, not touristy, near river/stream
For the record, I am capable of doing google searches but i just dont know what places just look good on the website. I am coming from eastern MD with a 4 yr old so want some where semi-close (4-5hrs) where we can do outdoorsy stuff, fish maybe. I LOVE the mountains and streams and would love a place with both. Please help! too many choices. could you suggest a town or an actual cabin rental if you know of any good ones (secluded but near a nice town).

My favorite memories from growing up are staying at cabins in Virginia , West Virginia, Tennessee during the summers. Although they are a little far from you try Douthat, Fairy Stone and Hungry Mother State Parks in Virginia Cabins, camping at Virginia State Parks
Rates are very reasonable. Most of these offer hiking, fishing, etc.
Good Luck !

Montebello (Nelson Cty, VA)- Several great cabin options surrounded by several 4000' peaks. Close to the AT and several cold mountain streams, not to mention the Crabtree Falls area at the base of the mountain. Closest to Lynchburg and Lexington.

Virginia State Parks rent cabins, have great fishing streams, boat rentals, the whole nine yards. I recommend Douthat State Park. Cabins are nice, have fire places, porches etc. They are located near Clifton Forge, VA. Trout streams are the bomb!

Hi,
We just spent 5 days at the New River Retreat Cabins Virginia Vacation Rental Cabins on the New River
I was great. Right on the river in Draper, Virginia. I can not say enough about how great it was. The cabin was beautiful, the price is great. It was hubby, myself, 11 yr daughter and 6 yr son. Inside the cabin they had fully stocked kitchen with pots, pans, dishes, all the kitchen stuff you need, tv, dish, movies to watch, books to read, games to play, but the kids spent all their time on the river, all we had to bring was ourselves and food.
If we were not moving to that area in a few months we would make that our place to go every vacation. Just go and check out their website. My sister lives in Bowie, Maryland and she made it down there in about 4 1/2 hours.
Have fun on your vacation.

I second the vote for New River Retreats. Beautifull cabins, quiet and reasonable. There are two of them just down the hill from me. The folks that own and run them are as nice as can be. Enjoy your vacation!

We spent a week camping through Virginia. Douthat was a really great park...lots of neat hiking. Actually Virginia has the most fantastic state parks I've seen lately. After our wonderful trip, we are now moving to Crabtree Falls. It is not at all touristy, and extremely beautiful.
