My husband and I decided to retire to Conway, SC (just outside of Myrtle Beach)five years ago. We built a beautiful home with everything we wanted. Although he’s happy here, I’m miserable. I’m a fiber artist and he’s a classic car guy. There is absolutely nothing for me to do other than shop (not my thing). We’ve also bought in a neighborhood with a terrible HOA (some truly nasty people here). I’ve been looking for a nice small town that would appeal to my artsy side and his car side, and we both love bluegrass music. So far, Staunton looks good, but there doesn’t seem to be much on the market. We have friends in Floyd (too mountainous - we got stuck in an ice storm once, and don’t want to do that again), and Fincastle (not much happening there). We need to stay in the $300,000 range. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Thanks, badger74. I’ve looked into Lynchburg, but we’re really looking for a small town with a friendly, actve community.

The Staunton area will have a lot of what your looking for. Staunton and Waynesboro have a small art community and Charlottesville has a big one as well as JMU in Harrisonburg. There are all kinds of classic car things throughout the valley. Housing is selling very quickly right now due to the pandemic. People from the larger areas, Northern Virginia & New England are buying rural and small town properties real fast. I have a friend in real estate and his phone never stops ringing. My advice is find a realtor if your serious and give them the ability to move quickly if you find a property you like.

Lynchburg Va used to have quite a few art communities, privately owned restaurants, local music groups, several historic districts with friendly people....a smaller town feel.

What's the town of Bedford, Va. like nowadays?

Besides Lynchburg, Daleville Va is a really nice up and coming area that’s close to Roanoke which has an excellent medical system and and a bunch of activities that you might be interested in. It’s worth a quick look!

You can checkout Harrisonburg just north of Staunton. It too is a very beautiful place. There should be homes out in the country available as the area is full of very small farms. There are a number of Amish in the area too.

Woodstock is just north of Harrisonburg and is a small town. Very friendly place and the town and surrounding areas always have events happening. At least when Covid is not here ruining things for everyone.

Default Thanks, Everyone

Thank you all for the suggestions. I’ll be busy online, and hopefully the virus will pass soon and we’ll be able to see these towns in person. Can’t wait!

I love Staunton, but Staunton is still in the mountains and does get snow and freezing precip. I don't think the weather is much different from the weather in Floyd.

If you like being coastal you could try somewhere around Wilmington NC, maybe Southport. It's definitely more artsy than Conway, but I know in Wilmington they do a big Rims on the River car show, too. Could be a good middle ground if you want to stay more south and coastal.
