How much is sales tax on groceries now? In MD groceries and medicine are not taxed.

FWIW, I just got my first paystub from MD after moving from VA. My state tax withholding appears to have gone up $140/month. *sigh* There goes my "its a wash" idea. We aren't buying $2800 in groceries per month. I should add I took a 3% raise, but that was higher than I thought the change would be.

[Ruby - you can NOT judge by what was withheld - you can only do a comparison at the end of the year after you file both federal and state. maybe your # of deductioins changed, maybe your raise influenced the figure - a whol;e host of parameters. NEVER judge by paychecks v paycheck. you must compare the ENTIRE YEAR. and of course since some items are taxed differently from state to state no exact way unless you kept every single receipt - which no one is going to do. the websites such as AArP and others do a very good job in the areas that matter.

However, I favor NW DC- does anyone know how this figures in....
There are some very nice areas in NW of various types, but much will depend on a) where you will work (assuming that you will), b) what sort of housing you prefer (detached, row house, high rise, loft, etc), and of course, c) the budget. No matter what, you'll end up living in the District though. I don't, but various friends do. The consensus seems to be that it's a little different there...
