A Casino which will include a 300 room hotel and 2,500 seat live entertainment venue will open in Danville in 2023. The town is desperate for jobs after the textile mills closed shop. The closest biggest city to Danville in Greensboro, NC which is about 45 minutes to the south along Hwy 29 ( future I-785 corridor). So they are definitely expecting to draw people from the Greensboro/Winston-Salem area. Having such a tourist destination, the city will likely expand its airport service especially to support a 300 room hotel. The closest major airport to Danville is Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro. Until then the casino will draw from the Greensboro area and other areas in Virginia.

Oh wow, I haven't heard about that. Don't forget about the Charlotte and RDU areas! Danville will be the closest casino to both heavily populated areas.

These casinos will at least offer a stable level of employment for Danville and other struggling rural towns. The jobs and visitors are desperately needed.

The median household income is around $32,000 a year in Danville. Do they really need something that many residents cannot afford? I don't keep up with gaming laws in VA but what amount of monies can be paid out on any machine? Just curious if gambling addictions are going to rise with something like this?

The goal of these casinos is also to attract out of area residents to gamble and spend money there.

A big event venue could be huge for a place like Danville post COVID. Many of these small towns where casinos could potentially be going have no event venue of considerable size around for hours.

No doubt it would benefit some folks. But will it benefit the right folks?

I used to spend a lot of time in a city in Indiana that had a casino, and was down on its luck like Danville.

The casino did provide a stable employment base. It wasn't to the tune of the manufacturing jobs they had lost, but was way better than something like a call center. It provided something to do. Crime wasn't worse than it was.

It wasn't the savior a lot of the TV ads show, but it certainly helped get some life into an otherwise dead city.

I'm kinda surprised it passed, tbh. There was a lot of vocal opposition from small businesses, as well as religious folks, and they bent over backwards to get others to vote "No". I live just outside city limits, so I couldn't vote on it. Personally, I don't have a problem with it.

I've driven by the area where the casino is planned several times and they damn sure got their work cut out for them. It needs some serious TLC.

You are correct that the old mill site looks like it was bombed out 20 years ago. I no longer live in Danville, but I wonder how that School field area will be developed?
That intersection of Main St and Memorial Drive has never exactly been thriving and the neighborhood immediately across the "tracks" is a series of smaller houses and small local stores down the road to Danville Community College.
I would imagine that the Ballou Park shopping center would see expansion and maybe the park itself seeing as it is directly across the street from where the casino is to be built.
I wonder what the residents of Forrest Hills think of the addition?

Why would other area small businesses not support? More people coming through the area is going to mean more potential customer traffic across the board.

Here in Bristol, virtually all businesses were for the casino. It passed roughly 2:1. There was some opposition from religious groups, but there was so much momentum behind it that I didn’t see it failing.
