I would recommend the York County schools and the Tabb and Grafton schools are the closest to Langley. Not sure of the age of your children but different elementary schools feed in to those two high schools. We lived about 4 miles from the West Gate and my daughter graduated from Tabb high school. We loved the school and the area. Poquoson is also very close to Langley and has very good schools as well but we preferred the Tabb area. Depending on your price range, there are many great neighborhoods in the area. Some you will hear are Wythe Creek Farms, Running Man and The Greenlands but there are tons of others.
Up towards and in Williamsburg you will also find some excellent schools but the drive in to work can be a real hassle at times. I would stick to the Tabb Grafton areas if you want to be close to the base. |

I second Irisheyes on Tabb and Poquoson. Personally, i recommend Yorkshire Downs which has plenty of working military families. Also if you can get into base housing i recommend Bethel Manor which is zoned for York County Schools (which are the best in Hampton Roads.) On Langley itself, do extremely careful research on the schools b/c Langley is zoned for Hampton schools (which is a decent system) but may not be zoned for the best area for schools. But if price is truly NOT an issue dont even worry about base housing.

My daughter will be starting Kindergarten next year. Our price range is no more then $2,000 renting and would prefer to have a short drive. Also does anyone know about testing early into kindergarten? My daughter misses the cut off by a few days and I would really prefer she starts early. Thanks so much for the info!

I was looking at the ratings for the schools and the ones in york county seemed to rate much higher then hampton. Bethel manor elementary is the military school correct? Is it actually on base or not and can your child attend if you are not in the district. I noticed the districts seem very small and am not sure what type of housing we will be able to find.

If I remember correctly, the Bethal Manor elementary school is on Bethal Manor which is actually an off base housing area. It is not the greatest housing around these days and the ;ast I hear, they were doing soome privatization so may be hard to get in to. You should check with the housing office though. The elementary schools in the surrounding area are all excellent so if you are off base, stick with the school for your housing area.
I can't help with your early testing question.. sorry.. There should be lots of rental options in the York County area that should fit your bill. Have you looked at militarybyowner.com and selected the rental search option? If not, it is a good place to start. If you are considering apartments or townhomes, there are some of them available as well. |
