Uh, no, at least not in the way I suspect that you're implying. The Roanoke metro area is enjoyably cosmopolitan, as are a number of college towns Southwest of Central and Northern Virginia. The Roanoke metro in comparison to the Richmond metro has 25% the population but like Richmond it is also growing, with growth primarily due to a steady influx of western, midwestern and northern folks such as myself.

Well, maybe I have not properly experienced deepeste Louisiana..........but during my 3,5+6 years in central Virginia, I find things very southern. Most peopel I know are very proud southerners and if I would tell them any different they would be offended. My fater-in-law and others I know calls everything north of Culpeper occupied Virginia. This is not out of respect, I should add.

Jennifer,
Coming from the Long Island area be prepared for some culture shock. It looks like you've been researching Charleston, SC which is where my family is planning to relocate as soon as we get our house sold . It is a great area for things to do, good schools ( in Dorchester and Berkeley counties) and of course you are at the beach. To stay in your housing price range you would have to look at Summerville or Goose Creek (about a 20 min. Commute to downtown. Their economy is still strong and you and your husband should not have problems finding a job.

Raleigh, NC is also a strong area for jobs and culture. You are about a 2-2.5 hour drive to the beaches at Wilmington and just a bit further to Myrtle beach.

In VA, the tidewater area is a sprawling metro area but at the coast. Stronger job market but I'm not sure about housing costs. If you want really laid back, look at SW VA around Roanoke. Lots to do, reasonable housing prices but the job market is not as strong as other areas. You are also looking at 6+ hours to the beach. Also look at Charlottesville.

Good Luck in your search!

Not really to me most urban areas (NoVa, Norfolk, Richmond) have a more northern feel to me. I always found more southern cities/towns to have a more relaxed approach to the daily routine. Most were a little to relaxed for my taste at the time. But like any perspective it changes over time.

There are towns/areas that are closer to the beach. The problem with the Hampton Roads area is with the glut of military people getting out jobs pay less than other areas of the state. Even though Virginia Beach is the largest city there are areas that still have a rural feel to them. Many choose to live just over the border in North Carolina and commute.

Gloucester and other northern neck town are nice but proximity to the water drives the prices up in many. As i'm sure you've seen Realtor.com can give you a feel for housing prices in an area. I've also found most newspapers are on line also.

I am sorry...I must have explained my self in a bad way.
That was what I was trying to say.

NoVa has more in common with Boston then with Appomattox or Danville...sort of..

Smile Appomattox

You would love Appomattox.. Nice schools.. great for starting a family. we have been married for almost 3 years and have had 3 kids in the last 2 yrs.. 3 boys..all under 2. We have lived in several areas in Va. But Appomattox has been the best. My husband works for a Large Plumbing Company and drives 20 minutes to work. I used to sell homes and i have had alot of people move from NY and MD and LOVE APPOMATTOX. Its not a very expensive place right outside of a Large city.. We have alot of history and heritage here.. VERY CLEAN!!!

Hello Everyone I am also from NY looking to move to Virginia. I am from the Long Island area and would also like to stay close to the beaches. I am a HS Science teacher and would be looking for a teaching position. I am in my late 30's, single with no children, and am looking for an area that has more of a feeling of community and involvement. Any suggestions on where to look for employment or a new place to call home would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I moved from Jamaica Queens New York nine years ago. I have never looked back. I love it here in Charlottesville. I have never been the party type girl but every once in a while I get the urge to go out and have a good time. Since Charlottesville doesnt really offer anything as far as clubs go i will usually got to a local bar with some friends and the crave goes away. I have three children and prefer Albemarle County schools over the Charlottesville City schools. The people here are nice ( most of them). You do have some with that old money attitude, nose up in the air, but Ive noticed all you have to do is put them in their place and they realize they bleed just like everyone else. lol Anyway I wish you all the best.
