Default NY to VA

My husband & I are thinking about relocating from long Island NY to SC, NC or Virginia. We are looking for a nice town that has a lot to do since we are by a major city. We do not like too much diversity, and are planning on having a family soon. Because of this we will need a good school district also. We will eventually like a house in the 200k - 250k range. Also, he is an operating engineer that deals with HVAC, however he is looking to get into a federal type of job like police, building insp, something along those lines. We are very nervous about salaries and the difference in living as far as that goes. I am an insurance broker and am sure I can find work anywhere I go. We are sick of the hustle & bustle & want a calm laid back life where we can afford to live. Thanks in advance for your help !

I have only been to SC out of the three, so I guess that is why I would lean more towards that state. I do not know much about the other 2, only that I like the weather, beach, and we can afford a house there with no problem. We are just worried about work & boredom. That is why I would like to be close to a town or city that has a lot to do.

Well, we moved from the NYC area to the Roanoke, VA area. We managed to lose most of the hustle and bustle, high crime, congestion, etc...and Roanoke still has a lot going on. Enough to stay busy, at least. Easpecially if you like being outside...hiking, camping, etc. But there's also shopping, malls, colleges, restaurants, arts, concerts, sports events, etc. Not sure about the diversity thing, though. I don't know what you are looking to avoid? But most everywhere (where you have a reasonable chance of avoiding being bored) is probably going to have some diversity. Especially in the southern part of the east coast.

Is the Roanoke area close to the beaches, or is it somewhere in the middle? Being from Long Island, losing the beach will be a major upset to me ! also, how are the jobs there, unemployment?

We've been outside Richmond for 10 years and like it. Prior to that we were in Va Beach for 20 and originally from NYC Suburbs. Virginia is not as fast paced as up north but not as comatose as further south. The beach (Ocean) is @1.5 hrs and the bay beaches are closer. In Henrico County we have the ammenities you want. Richmond is 15 minutes away and Washington DC is about 1.5 hrs -5 hrs depending on the traffic.

It would seem best to narrow down the potential jobs first then expand your exploration of the surrounding areas.

Roanoke is in the southwestern portion of VA. We're probably about 4 hrs from beaches. (I moved here more for the mountains more than for beaches!)
The employment/unemployment situation...you will get different opinions on that. I will say this though...if possible, always try to land employment prior to a move. That goes for anywhere.

Are there any towns closer to the beaches that you know of that are good? The problem that we have is we are clueless when it comes to the south, so we rather take interest in a couple areas where we could see our selves living, research them, visit them, then job hunt before we actually go.

Deltaville..........it is right on the beach. It is almost like you travel back in time though. Richmond is in driving distance.
