I've always pictured Virginians as classy, cultivated southerners as opposed to the stereotypical barefoot redneck. Which category do the people of Waynesboro fall into?

OK...I was born in Waynesboro, moved away until the age of 10 or so(my father was in the Air Force) and then returned to the Sherando/Lyndhurst area just outside of Waynesboro to finish junior high and high school. After graduating, I joined the Air Force and lived outside of the area for more than 8 years. In 2000 I returned to the area and have lived here since. This being said I will give my opinion from a local standpoint. Charlottesville is MUCH more progressive and liberal than the Waynesboro area. Waynesboro is located appx. 25 miles West of Charlottesville on the Western side of The Blue Ridge Mountains. Both places have their distinct advantages and disadvantages, so I will do my best to try to explain. The cost of living, etc... is much cheaper in the Waynesboro area. Waynesboro and the surrounding area is mainly comprised of blue collar middle to lower middle class conservatives. Religous, cultural, and social views all reflect this. Waynesboro and the area have much more of a "redneck" vibe. Charlottesville has a small town feel but with The University of Virginia located there, has a much more liberal and progressive vibe. Costs for pretty much everything are considerably higher in Charlottesville. I would suggest the surrounding areas just outside of Charlottesville for the best of both worlds.(ie: Crozet, Ivy, and the surrounding Albermarle and Nelson county areas.) You have to remember that Central Virginia is a predominately traditional Southern values and mindset location. But with that being said, the population in this area is continually growing. There are people from all over the world that migrate to this area for the beautiful scenery and the slower paced lifestyle. As with any area, the more effort you put into understanding and researching exactly what you are specifically looking for will help in any transition worries you may have. I hope this helps in some way. =)
