Waynesboro Vs Charlottesville - The People
What are the main differences from the people of Waynesboro verses Charlottesville.
Is Waynesboro more "southern"?
Any other insight would be great. It doesn't have to be related to people.
Thank you.

Having grown up between the two areas I'd say that yes Waynesboro is a bit more 'Southern' if by southern you mean conservative. Charlottesville, having UVa, has a more liberal mindset than Waynesboro.
Waynesboro is cheaper to build in, so they're gaining shops and chains that Charlottesville is not. Rue 21, Maurices, Martin's grocery. Charlottesville is more expensive to live in but generally considered one of the better places to live in Virginia.
Hope that helps

I don't mind conservative.
What I want to avoid are rednecks. Would you describe Waynesboro as having a lot of rednecks?

I don't know if this is sarcasm or not.
I have never been there. I only know it from online research. Why?

Let's just say Mr J is not a big fan. I'd also say there are many hard-working, NASCAR loving , church going folks in central/southern VA. There are also a fair number who are not except maybe the hard-working part.

If I came across as sarcastic, I deeply apologize.
The reason why I asked was because to me, saying you want to avoid a certain group of people while looking at moving to South-central Virginia, well, how can I put this in a nice way….
………..Badger74 said it best.

I just want to get an idea of what they would be like. I am a Christian so I don't mind Christians there but I am not a fan of a strong southern accent, racism, nascar, chewing tobacco and whatnot.
I just don't know what exactly to expect. I get the impression that Charlottesville is more progressive and I wanted to know if Waynesboro was similar or just the opposite.
Thanks.

Waynesboro could honestly be described as "redneck". C'ville, although more expensive to live there, is a bit higher on the cultural ladder, with a more diverse population (and larger population). You will find areas of Waynesboro that are not as "redneck" due to many folks wanting to be closer to the cultural opportunities of C'ville, without the higher cost of living. You might also want to look at Staunton.

Hey Dave,
Here's a good way to put it in context: C'ville, with its University and influx of all sorts of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, is blended with a strong contingent from the military and high-tech folk. And interwoven into this hodge-podge is a small blue-blood, native Virginian population. I think this last group is more dominant in Waynesboro. As one poster said, Waynesboro has kept a lot of its charm and local flavor because it lies over the mountain, away from the direct influences of C'ville. Property values are lower, cost of living is lower, population is less dense. As a result, income to support infrastructure is less and the need to attract business to help off-set costs means the large conglomerates have been moving in--Home Depot, Super Wal-Mart, etc.
And all around you see the strong presence of organized religion--it's the south. But understand, demographics were DRAMATICALLY different for us coming from New Hampshire! Probably not so severe since you're right outside of Bean Town.
The analogy would be C'ville is like Brookline, MA and Waynesboro would be Fall River. You get it? Good to see you're doing your research. And I hope this helps, from one New Englander to the next! Sorry I didn't reply directly before. Sometimes life just has a way of getting in the way!
All my best.
