Default Best High Schools

Hello everyone.

I was hoping to get input with people who are familiar with the public high schools in the Charlottesville area. I recently accepted a position at the UVA hospital and am thoroughly excited about the opportunity to work there. However, I am now the legal guardian of my younger brother, who happens to be a high school sophomore. I need advice as to what schools are the most desireable - in other words, what school would you send your kid to if given a choice? Just to be clear, I am primarily concerned with which HS is the best, not second or third best. I haven't gotten a place to live yet, so nothing is set in stone. I would not mind exchanging a longer commute for a better school. Same thing goes for rent/mortgage. Of course, any and all advice will be appreciated.

I suggest you visit a yahoo user group called Parenting Network of Charlottesville (PNOC) ... it is an active e-mail listserv, which I have found to be *immensely* helpful. You can join, then post the question. Or, search the site for info. that may have been posted already. Also, I am sure you have heard of greatschools.net? It provides 1-10 ratings for schools.

I believe that Western Albemarle is highest rated in the U.S. News and World Report ratings of public high schools. I have known several gifted students at Charlottesville High and there were some good programs there for them.

MY nephew graduated from there last year and he was in IB programs overseas and they took ALOT of his advanced credits etc...
I was impressed at graduation at the array of different Universities the graduates were attending.. many Ivy leagues etc...
