One thing I would like you to bring down is more winter weather! When we were up (1st days of May '02) in Montreal we got to walk in falling snow. I don't think that you'll be seeing that here, but we do have great Fall weather.

cocozot61, I don't know enough about Lynchburg to comment but I do know that I really, really, like the Roanoke area. The mountains, valleys and pastoral settings remind me of Vermont. I would think the topography of Lynchburg would be more similar to Montreal. If you are working in Tyco then you should really stay close to Lynchburg. There are others here who will point you in the right direction.

back from the trip.
I'm finally getting a chance to write for us. We both loved Lynchburg. We went into Roanoke for a day, but really didn't see it. We decided it was too busy for us. So to the other guy that wants to be close to a big city- you will like Roanoke. We did do Burger in the Square. They ground their meat fresh daily. I can't describe in words how good it was!!! We did drink from the dog mouth fountain. They could use to clean it as it's a little scuzzy where the water accumulates. We did the Roanoke star overlook and the Mill Mountain Zoo.
Looking for Lynchburg stuff to bring home was tough. The visitors center had stuff, but nothing I wanted. Chris got a cardinal hand towel for his mom. I did get some Virginia tech shirts from sears and there was a sporting goods store. But for the Virginia is for Lovers mugs and shirts Hickory Farms in the River Ridge Mall. Plus on some stops on the way back home we saw the usual touristy stuff.
One thing I noticed about Virginia and Lynchburg is there is NO Dunkin Doughnuts stores. There are Starbucks. So if you're like me and love DD then you have to find a Hess gas station and you can get DD coffee there. However the freshness varies by the last time they made it. On the way back we stopped @ some gas station/store and they had it AND doughnuts. But I was a little spooked as to how far the doughnuts must have traveled to get there- so I didn't do it.
We did go to Smith Mountain Lake. It was really nice. Rediculously high housing going up around the lake. We went through part of Forest and Bedford to get there. Forest looks a little pricey.
I didn't notice Lynchburg to have any deficiencies. It's a very clean place. I would have liked to have talked to more people.
I am concerned that getting a job there is probably contingent upon who you know and what church you attend.

I haven't spent any time in Lynchburg, but Roanoke has DD.

Early in the morning, they quickly slide the fresh donuts in little stacks onto the tails of donkeys, and gallop for the outlying gas stations that carry DD products.

I was just talking to a neighbor this morning about SML. He's an older man, and a native of this area. I mentioned to him about the nasty oil slicks in that man-made puddle, and he added something about all the garbage in it too. Someone's making a killing off of that flooded valley!

J1n- Where is Roanoke's DD(s)? Here in the Burg, every Wilco has put up a post and a trough for the donkeys that made the trip to drop off the doughnuts.

The DD/BR location:
3620 Franklin Rd SW
Roanoke, VA 24014
A March '08 article in the Roanoke Times suggests that a few more DDs will be opened up in Roanoke over the next 3-5 years.

At around the same time, there was a news story that stated that DD would be building several locations in the Lynchburg area also, but all we've gotten so far is the Wilco donut cabinets! That's alright- all the good things are bad for you anyway!

So true I avoid doughnuts like the plague. I try to eat healthy most of the time and if I had doughnuts in my house I'd tear through them.
As for coffee, I've had a Senseo coffee maker for years now and I love it. It uses coffee pods which I buy in large quantity from Amazon to save $. My favorite is the dark roast. I've got several friends who are coffee snobs and they all give the Senseo coffee a thumb's up. One of the best things about the Senseo is that it helps naturally limit the amount of coffee I drink because it makes only 1-2 cups on demand. Prior to owning it I would drink more coffee and suffer the consequences (sour stomach once in a while, etc).

My wife asked for a Senseo one Christmas so she was given one. She really like it, but never used it enough to keep it around and it went out in a yard sale! I am a self-proclaimed coffee snob and I also thought the Senseo made a good cup of coffee, though not quite as good as my Krups!
Either way, I'd prefer Mill Mountain over DD OR Starbucks any day.
