Mendota's a tiny town in western Washington Co. (SW VA) that nestles up against Clinch Mountain. I drove up from Kingsport, TN on Sun. 11/2 to explore a bit.

Swinging bridge over the North Fork of the Holston River:

The views from the Mendota fire tower (elev. 3020') are amazing on a clear day, and the foliage color was brilliant in the late-afternoon sun:

A few pics from Mendota in late October of last year:

Beautiful shots! It looks a good deal like my neck of the woods over in Boones Mill.

I was just up there 2 weeks ago and took many photos also....but I have to admit, yours are so much more vivid than mine! I have 10.5 acres near Mendota (mine's in Scott County) and it is truly a beautiful area. Whenever I tell someone that my property is in Mendota, VA, they've never heard of it, so the title of your post really caught my eye. One of these days I hope to build a home on my piece of paradise and move up there.

Thanks for sharing your photos. I'll try to post some of mine tomorrow....

Thanks, I look forward to seeing your pics. Much of SW Virginia is stunningly beautiful but I think it'll stay lightly populated for many years to come. My family still has 17 acres in Moccasin Valley in Scott Co., visible in some of the photos above, that an ancestor settled in the 1780s. I hope to build a log cabin overlooking the creek there in the next few years.

Wow! What gorgeous scenery! Maybe it's my location, but I was disappointed that there was very little red color this year.

Have never heard of Mendota so I had to look it up on Google Earth to see where it was.

Here is an old hay barn reflecting in a pond on my property.

Thanks for sharing those, SCBeaches! You captured some really nice color and I especially love the shot of the barn.
