Default Is Abingdon a safe place to stay overnight?

Hi there,
I'm planning my drive from NY to Texas and the Abingdon, VA area looks like a good spot for us to stop for the first night and I was wondering if someone could give me a little info about the area.

My mom and I will be driving down route 81 south and are looking for a good safe place to get some dinner and sleep overnight. I don't mind spending a little extra on a hotel for a good nights sleep and piece of mind. Do you think Abingdon is a good place to stop for the night? Any suggestions on hotels and restaurants close to the highway? I'm usually a Marriott person but don't see any in Abingdon... any other suggestions? Thanks for the help!!!

Abingdon is a very safe and quaint town that I would highly recommend. There are several bed and breakfast inns, the Martha Washington Inn (high $$, but a wonderful experience), Hampton Inn, Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and others.

Abingdon is a beautiful area. We spent a week in neighboring Damascus this summer. Delightful! I can't wait to return.
