Just to add my 2 cents...
I live in Staunton. I have seen many who HATE this town, and many who LOVE it. It does have things to offer. It's a very progressive vibe here with the influx of new business and renovation. It's really quaint. The townspeople are pretty nice, and many are newbies who moved here from elsewhere. In response to a previous post: There are mixed families here, and I have never witnessed any racism toward them. They might say that it happens, but I have never heard from anyone that it does. I am sure that there are plenty of old conservative types here, but they exist almost everywhere. Staunton can be very clique-ish - but that is all changing.
Now, this town can suck if you are single. It's hard to meet people unless you frequent the bars - and you don't want to do that all the time because frankly, the local singles are sometimes scary.
There are things for kids to do here. Yes there is a bowling alley. There is not much for toddlers (no childrens meuseum) or teenagers. That's why there is such a drug problem with teens.
Thankfully it's growing and there are things close by in Charlottesville etc.
Don't lose hope Yvette!
