I remember Williamsburg Pottery Factory as being a fabulous place for people on a tight budget to get fun things for the home, epecially things like lawn statues, fancy frames for art work and wedding gifts. You have to pick through a lot of stuff to find the treasures, but if you have a day to spend, I always thought going there was a fun way to spend a Saturday. I want to recommend it to a young couple as a fun shopping trip, but haven't been there in years. Is it still worth a 90-minute drive?

if they have what you want it is wonderful. has changed over the decades - as have shoppers and our wnats.

the best buys are:

frames - the best custom frame shop within hours. prices excellent, great selection. on busy week-ends and holidays may take overnight, slower times if you order in the morning they try to have it ready by COB

lamp shop - they wull drill anything and sell the kits or put it together. i recebtly had a cowboy boot made into a lmap - have done seagulld, vases of course. a true bargain and so unique and special. they also sell pre-made lampshades at prices that can't be beat

silk/dried flowers - the best selection and price. also custom arrangements - bring in a patch of fabric or color ideas, give them a price range and pick out the vase/base and the main flower and they will make a custom arrangement.

dishes/household items - pick and choose, look careful at coindition. great bargains

candles - huge selection and best prices. we have a new Candle factory in town - it is ugly and overpriced, people pay twice as much for same size you can get at pottery.

garden shop and clay pots and yard sculpture -

lots has changed, the pottery had a slump once other big box places opened. prices almost always better and the custom stuff can't be beat. also check out the rugs

a search engine is a wonderful thing...
http://www.williamsburgpottery.com/

i decided to see if they had a website. of course they do! i've never needed it since i live so close - this might help others.

closing? no, it is not. there was an article in the paper about renovations at the top of tracks and that area chaging. nowhere in that article did it say the pottery was closing. where did you read this?

I am trying to remember - and it was just recently...in fact, the article stated that the kiln would not be preserved - that it was thought that it might have historic significance, but would not be preserved....I'm not making this up...wish I could remember where I read that...hmmm.

It doesn't say that it is remaining either....it does say that they are putting in a shopping center though. The article does say the old pottery buildings are being torn down along with the original kiln...it does not say that the pottery will continue - it seems unclear to me.

I think its "ok". I get better bargains at thrift stores for the same items too, for pennies on the dollar, but I still lurk for that special bargain, sometimes!
