Are you referring to someone who is just joining the coast guard? I don't really know a whole lot about how it works, but from my experience, when my boyfriend first joined, he spent 2 months at a time on a large cutter at sea. Then he'd be "home" for a month (Cape May, NJ) and then go out again for 2 months. He seemed to hate it most of the time, but they got to stop at some really cool ports like Aruba and Jamaica. He did this for a little over a year before going to A School to learn his specialty, and now he's stationed on land for 2 years until his next assignment. I think a lot depends on what job you take in the Coast Guard, some have more sea time than others. My boyfriend is an MST, which he chose because apparently they stay on land most of the time. He's been in for a little over 3 years now. I'm probably not the best person to ask about what it's like to be in the Coast Guard, but I know what it's like to deal with someone who is.
Are you joining?
