Do any of you get that sinking feeling NY won't have anyone left within the next 10 years??????????? Anyways, cried everytime we drove out of Va. and regret we didn't replant ourselves there 14 years ago but now, as retirement nears and we realize we HATE NY weather, the ever rising taxes and the lack of opportunites for our grown kids (we figure they will follow after we move and assure them things are better in Va.) we spend time in here noting the good and bad and trying to decide the where to live etc....thankfully, there's no school issues so other than that, a quaint retiree like home is all we need.......I left my heart in Roanoke long ago and hopefully will reunite in 4 years......hang in there Rochesterians.....
Well said... very well said. While we love living here in spring, summer & fall.. winter ain't no fun anymore. And it just doesn't seem like the politics or economic "burdens" are ever going to improve very much. And my wife and I are looking at 2 to 4 years before heading south... sigh...
Our son is leaving home this summer for an out-of-state job, and that leaves us with just the dogs & cat. So... the next couple of years are all about getting the house prep'd for selling!

We Rochesterians will have to stick togwther as we contemplate our move to Virginia....and like Upstate Dave, we are prepping the house for resale and getting our other ducks in a row....today, the weather has turned to heavy rain and the temps have dropped again and in Roanoke I believe it's in the 70s ..THIS is what I don't want to contend with as I get "older"; the time we're locked in our homes wating for Spring to stay for a while.....no wonder we're the festival capital of the country...we're so desperate to get outside that when nice weather arrives it's no holds bar.....

But weather aside, I'm really concerned about the overall financial health of NY....it seems we are quickly becoming the most expensive in every category and when we're dependant on retirement funds down the road, that doesn't make for very promising "golden years"...

With the beautiful landscape of the state, maybe the govt could turn it into national park sans NYC !!!!!!

Default Move to VA

To All Bored New Yorkers.....WELCOME to Virginia and especially the ROANOKE
VALLEY. Discover this "diamond in the rough" often overlooked place on the east coast. I see its great potential but it needs more people from other areas to give it some momemtum. I think it tends to look back too much. Its such a nice place to live, the locals sometimes don't embrace change and they have tried(unsuccessfully) to prevent it from growing. Roanoke will continue to grow but I hope it won't forget its natural beauty along the way.
Again, unlike many southern areas, we in Roanoke are eager to welcome newcomers!

Roanoker.... you just cannot imagine how much my wife & I are looking forward to relocating there. As I've posted before, we are a few (short) years away, but we are always checking the weather conditions in Roanoke compared to Rochester and other cities we have friends. As far as making an impact in the community... we hope to assimilate as best as possible. We do not want to be regarded as northerners come to re-invent SW Virginia! LOL ! We just want warmth! And to be allowed to keep a little more of our hard earned income! If our presence in the community improves the outlook, then so be it!

We even have our good friends & next door neighbors contemplating moving there with us!

Smalltown... PM me if you would like to have an off forum conversation.
