Default Suggestions for a nice size Virginia town close to the mountains and that has industries for engineering jobs.....

A town that is scenic and has shopping and good schools would be a great suggestion for family living. Thanks for any information......

The Roanoke Valley, or neighboring Blacksburg, VA - the biggest town in VA. Blacksburg is home to Virginia Tech and a number of engineering firms. Ditto for Roanoke, which is Virginia Tech's partner city, and home to the future Carilion / VT medical school.

Roanoke:

With Areva, BWX Tech, Parker Hannifin, Southern Air and others Lynchburg has a good supply of engineering jobs. The nuclear firms have many openings.

Lynchburg would provide the best opportunities for engineering jobs compared to any other locality along the mountains in VA. I can be hiking on the Appalachian trail 20 min. from my house in the James River Face Wilderness. If you are into the medical profession, Roanoke is a great choice, but for engineering, Lynchburg is tops. A little independent research can confirm the status of Lynchburg as an engineering hotspot in VA and can also show you how close Lynchburg lies to the Blue Ridge.

Lynchburg area firms were always hiring at VT's career fairs. We had a lot of nuclear research type companies, like Areva, coming in at some of my classes.

Leesburg would probably be another choice to live, the Dulles corridor is loaded with Engineering and technology firms and within commuting distance of leesburg.

I'm moving to Ashburn and work as a mechanical engineer in Gainesville. One of the things I liked about Ashburn was the view of the mountains in the horizon, even though it's not all that close, it reminded me of Blacksburg and VT.
