Unhappy Hurricanes -- How bad do they effect VA?

I'm thinking of moving to VA but all these hurricanes lately are making me think twice.

How do hurricanes effect VA? Lots are rain? Flooding? Full on wind-damage?

For all of Virginia, not just near the shore.

Well, VA gets a direct hurricane hit in intervals of 5-7 years between hits. By the time it reaches us it is usually a weak Cat 1 or 2. Most of the damage is downed trees and power lines inland and light flooding near the water We do get remants to other hurricanes more often. Not the best place for avoiding hurricane effects but WWWAAAYYY better than the Gulf or Florida.

Hurricane effects can happen in the most unexpected places. Just a couple weeks ago i went to Louisville, KY and saw the damage that the remants of Hurricane Ike did to that city. People were without power for up to two weeks, school was out for a week, and there was a massive amount of tree damage. Louisville is probably about a good 700 miles inland, so hurricane effects can happen more places than you think.

We had the remnants of Isabel pass through a couple years ago--what damage we had! Many places had no electricity for a month or more--horrible. We were lucky--we were 28 hours without electric, but folks down the road didn't get up and running for days or weeks, in some cases.
Doesn't happen often, and the damage can vary--we'd been quite a long time without any major winds, so weak trees were ripe for falling! And the above-ground electric lines--well, the trees fell on them.....
