We were young and naive. The realtor actually told us that they (she and her son owned the property for sale) would not allow any more home inspectors because the last one did some damage to a portion of the lower roof. How foolish we were! I had since learned that if we caught her saying that on tape, she would have been in real trouble with the NJ Dept. of Housing. When it was too late, we found out the well was bad, the cesspool (yes, NOT septic, cesspool) was bad, the plumbing was put in backward etc. etc. The house ended up bankrupting us.
This was in 1988. We had never lived in the country before and knew nothing of these things. All we knew is we wanted to get out of the city.
BTW, I am sure that somebody, somewhere was paid off. The water was totally undrinkable. If you put a glass of it out overnight, the next morning a 1/4 inch of iron deposits would be in the bottom. And yet the county inspectors passed everything in the house. There is corruption on the local level.
So please, heed the advice of the people here. Don't let your dreams die like we did and end up broke. BTW, the house wasn't even listed as a fixer-upper or in need of major work. They tried to hide everything hoping gullible people would come along. Like us. Desperate and running away from a bad situation....
