I don't know Canter Estates, but Winchester is a great place for families. There are wonderful arts programs through Shenandoah University, and the city schools are good. There's a lot of growth from NoVA, so these opportunities will only get better. That being said, housing costs will probably seem high, given the size of the area. Rest assured these are the lowest prices close to northern VA! There are several new developments going up, I'd just google them. Some builders in this area are Centex, Richmond American,Hepler Construction. I'll add more if I come up with them.

The last time I drove through Winchester (late summer) about 3 in 4 for sale signs had REDUCED tagged on them. Family I have just outside city limits said the market just completely tanked around mid-summer. Sort of in line with when fuel started getting more expensive and % rates were in mid-climb. Those unfinished developments slowed development significantly. I'm sure it will correct itself but I'd make sure you were happy buying in an unfinished development that might stay barren for alot longer than people thought they would two years ago.

Welcome, fellow marksman.
A few questions for your question.
Schools? Age of kids, grade, etc. It makes a difference.
How long before you settle in? I can give you the name of a private builder that will put the big ticket boys to shame, through PM if you so desire.
If you're set on neighborhood living, be advised that Canter, Mosby Station, and that end of the county in general is growing rather quickly. The schools your kids are in today may change in the not so distant future.

There is a sub division within 30 minutes of Winchester, Va in Slanesville WV. The taxes are less, the area is beautiful. You can get so much more. Go to www.bristolspringswv.com for more information. If you are a first time homebuyer, the new stimulos package has a $8,000.00 tax credit for first time homebuyers. You have to buy before November 2009. It is a tax credit not a tax reduction.
Good luck
