Default Town/city with water AND mountains?

My sister wants water (lakes, etc.) and I want mountains. We're both middle-aged so we don't want/need lots of nightlife but do want some cultural and outdoor activities. But the main thing is nice, conservative people and a cost of living that isn't through the roof.

Any suggestions?

Boones Mill, Franklin County:

15-30 minutes to Smith Mountain Lake:

30-45 minutes to Fairystone Lake:

15-25 minutes to downtown Roanoke:

Folks in the Roanoke metro are quite friendly and the cost of living is quite low relative to the rest of the country. Politically, I lean to the left of center. The Roanoke region tends to lean right of center and offers a friendly environment for anyone regardless of your political or personal persuasion.

Hi!
You just described the Smith Mountain Lake area. Question - do you want to be on the water with a view of the mountains, or views of water and mountains (much more reasonable) We have amazing outdoor festivals, there is something going on constantly. Restaurants on and off the water that provide everything from very casual to fine dining! Extremely friendly atmosphere everywhere you go, and a diverse population. Home prices can soar, but off water with lake access - and or lake views can be quite reasonable at this time. If you can answer the above question I will be able to better guide you and send info. FYI - my husband and I have been on the lake for 30 years, and also have a home in Roanoke. We are natives of this area so we know the surrounding counties and the people very well, I'm very excited for you!!
