thinking of relocating to c'ville from conservative part of ohio. How is c'ville as far as gay friendly? Where is the best area to live there to be comfortable.

I live in Lynchburg- very conservative, as many people here point out; I have and have had many gay/lesbian friends here, and again, that is in Lynchburg. They profess to be and seem to be, by all appearances, happy, and not at loss for friends of either orientation. Charlottesville would surely be just as open or more open to one living an alternative lifestyle of any kind. I haven't noticed a large number of rainbow emblems on business (such as I've seen in Nantucket or Provincetown) but contrary to what many people would think or suggest, most people you'd run into in VA are not going to treat you any differently based on your orientation. You might have a lot less disposable cash if you moved than you do now; Roanoke (I'd say Lynchburg, but a bunch of posters would argue it) might also be a good alternative; just as many amenities and not quite as hard on the wallet.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will have to look into how far Lynchburg is from C'ville. I am amazed at the cost of housing in C'ville. Guess this could be a forced downsizing.

My impression is that C'ville is quite gay friendly. I knew quite a few lesbians there and they seemed happy and had active social and professional lives.

What would be the best area to look for a house. We need 2-3 bedrooms and a small yard at least. What is the deal with no garages in C'ville. We come from a similar cold climate and most have 2 or 3 car garages. It is hard to find just 2 cars in C'ville

Carports or nothing was the standard for homes in the South for many years. Also, most homes were/are built on a crawl space or slab, rather than a basement. Older large (by Southern standards) homes with garages and basements are much more common in the snow belt.

Charlottesville is a college town, rather liberal by Virginia standards. I'd be shocked if it is not gay-friendly.

I think Cville is pretty gay friendly. It's definitely liberal, especially in the city area. Just go to Escafe on the downtown mall. It's practially a gay bar at night last time I checked. It's an open minded university town. And there's always Club 216. Dave Matthews has even shown up there in the past.

As for garages, I've never had a garage- not even living in New York or New England. Well, now in NE we have a garage, but it's so old and small we put our kayaks in it Yay for digging your car out of the snow.
