Nice town? Where do you work if you live here (medical field)? Airport nearby? Low crime? Biggest near by city is? Does this town have a movie theater, things to do for kids?

It looks like a national forest nearby and a lake? Nice place to take the family? Freeway access looks to be close. sitting very close to the NC boarder.

Thanks in advance

Default Not so Pleasant Town Services In Abingdon, VA

On Tuesday September the 2nd at 10 PM a uniformed Abingdon Police department officer questioned, detained and harassed my son and his girlfriend while sitting in my vehicle on private property. I became aware of their presence outside my apartment after hearing the officer yelling commands extremely loudly. My son was programming frequencies into a ham radio he had just installed in my truck; his girlfriend had just got off work and was sitting in the passenger seat. I asked the officer what he was doing and he replied “go back in the house, before I put your ass in jail”, my son was fully cooperating and had explained to the officer that the vehicle belonged to me.
The officer had a bag of spearmint leaves that I was using as a air freshener, he was claiming it to be “narcotics”. The officer shouted the question to my son “Where did you get these narcotics!” many of the neighbors were looking out their doors and able to hear his entire conversation. I advised the officer that if he didn’t know the difference between spearmint leaves and marijuana that he should choose another profession. Approximately 10 minutes after the officer began his interrogations on my son and his girlfriend and just seconds after I had stepped outside another marked officer arrived, this officer indicated to me on multiple occasions that my presence in my own driveway could lead to my arrest and urged me to go back inside.. My son was in his own yard; therefore he did not have his “papers” ID, his girlfriend’s ID was in her car parked several yards away. With the other officer present the first cop instructed my son to go inside and retrieve his wallet, before doing so he patted him down and asked him the usual spill if he had anything in his pockets that would hurt him. The second officer escorted my son past me and to the door, as my son proceeded inside to get his wallet the second officer came inside the hallway and shined his flashlight up the staircase. Back to my truck and my son with his ID the officer did not search him again, The officer continued to use multiple test kits on the leaves on top of the cruiser out of sight of the dash camera. I was extremely concerned the officer would “contaminate” the test kit or even worse and there would be no evidence to support our innocence. The test were negative and the officer took there ID’s towards the back of his cruiser, I did not observe or hear on the dash cam recording ( went to the police station later to file complaint) him calling or checking their ID’s with dispatch or using a laptop. The officer returned me my spearmint and left. There was no apology, no Im sorry for being loud and aggressive, he just left. My only context with the officer was for him to have a bad day as he was leaving with no reply. My dialogue consisted of unanswered questions and being told I would be arrested if I didn’t leave.

The following context is directly from my son and his gf. The officer approached us quickly and turned on his right alley light atop the car, and asked me “ Are you OK” three times then asked me what I was doing, (about 3 or 4 times, loudly) I replied yes and that Im programming a ham radio I just installed for my dad, I showed him a large folder in my lap with the frequencies. He then exited his vehicle and began shining his flashlight in the vehicle, while he visually searched the vehicle he made a comment about a local radio club, shining the light on a open can of altoids mints he asked us what the white powdery substance was, I replied Altoids.. He then proceeded to have me rearrange the center console; this was when he asked about the bag of spearmint. When he found it he shouted mid question “whats your (asking about my ham callsign) 10-4 “ extra emphasis on the 10-4 he yelled it my face. I told them it was my dads and he was using it as an air freshener, I even handed the officer the bag….after this we went back and forth as I continued to tell him what it was and that I didn’t get it from anybody and that I wasn’t selling it. I offered to call my dad on my cell phone which was laying on the dashboard, upon reaching for it the officer shouted “put the phone down!” “You aint calling anyone!” After that my dad came out…his part is completely accurate...
As you can see my son had done nothing to provoke the interrogation and hassle,
I went to the chief of police to file a complaint, that was a waste of time the officer indicated his officer was well within his means and did a good job. The officer backed him 100%. Since the chief of police would not act I did not feel it was necessary to bring this to a town council meeting, rather speak my 1st amendment rights and tell everyone how inexperienced, dangerous, and intimidating the Abingdon Police Department can be, on other terms it is not advisable to be outside your home after dark or in a stopped vehicle for more than a couple minutes...

This is why they do this. Go to Town Council or call the media. Watch how fast things get done!
