KatOne.....I'd come out and give it a serious look. The commute to Reston is NOT that bad, and there are options of different ways to get there. With your childrens' ages, you'd be right at home...and the schools are very good. The community is made up of younger families!!!

So, be honest. What would a commute time to Reston from South Riding look like? I'm guessing at least an hour if he left the house at 7:15 a.m.
I'd say an hour each way is about the most he would be able to stand on a regular basis. Any more than that and I think it would start to be a quality of life issue with us...

I can't speak to that exact commute, but I live in Gainesville and worked in Herndon at Worldgate and drove past South Riding every day and my commute was 40-50 minutes each way.

I don't know where he's going in Reston, but on a normal basis, excluding when there's a serious accident, I'd definately say under an hour, hour max....

Depends on how he goes. If he takes Rte 50, then count on an hour easy- probably more. If he takes the back roads to get onto Rte 28 then count on about 45 min to an hour. Thing is, if he leaves 30 minutes earlier, he can make the drive in 30 minutes. I have been watching my commute time increase along with my taxes for over 7 years. The dopes running the county have no concept nor demonstrated concern for the quality of life for the suckers who voted them in so I don't see any improvements coming in the near future.
Fortunately, South Riding offers pretty much all you need and so you can avoid the parking lots called roads for the most part. Traffic is ridiculous but, with a little flexibility you can curb your homocidal tendencies for the jerk next you on the road but leaving earlier or later in the morning.
South Riding is a great place for a young family but, until the clowns in Leesburg remove their heads from their rectums, I don't see the traffic issues being addressed with any serious thought for quite a long time... and the builders (Toll, Ryan, Pulte) couldn't care less.

yep, Rt. 50 is a mess....alot of people, however, either go across 50 (forget the road maybe 626??) towards Dulles Airport and then cut back to 28...or backside of South Riding down Braddock and across Chantilly/Centreville/Sully to 28......

South Riding Community opinion
I moved here just over a year ago and live in South Riding. The area is great for families! My wife stays home with our two children and rarely needs to leave the community-- the area is growing tremendously... several restaurants are being built, grocery, shopping, etc are all here. There will be a Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, etc. in just over a year. Community amenities are great and well kept. We're renting b/c the real estate market here is so unpredictable and prices are falling-- not sure when the "bottom" will hit, but it might be getting close.
Loudoun Cty Pkwy (Old Ox Rd, rt 606) is a good shortcut around the Dulles airport to get to Rt 28/sterling/herndon/reston and avoid the ridiculous traffic on Rt 50 during rush hour times (0730-0900). Further residential development was recently disapproved so traffic congestion should not get much worse over time.
I'd recommend the location to anyone working nearby, but not in D.C. b/c of the traffic issues out this way (I avoid 66 like the plague and take back roads to avoid the congestion on Hwy 50)
Another great place to look if you're working in Reston/Herndon is Ashburn/Brambleton-- their town centre is growing and just opened a nice theater, restaurant, etc... very close to the Dulles Toll Road and access to DC or other areas East.

With prices so unstable, whats a good place to live, if working in Reston/ Herndon. Is it South Riding, Ashburn, Leeaburg or other. From a small family comfort, commute, price and future growth perspective

I live in South Riding. There are many forclosed propertys in the neighborhood that can be picked up. I work in Herndon and it takes 20 minutes to get to work daily. It is as 12 mile trip each way.

I have done some research over a community called South Riding in Chantilly Va... anybody has any comments about this place? It looks relatively new and outside of busy towns like Reston or Vienna, which is good in my mind. Is it a good place to move a young familiy and start a new life in Virginia?

The area is heavy conjested during peak hours b/c of commuting folks. If I were you I would start out in Fredericksburg or lady smith. I know the traffic threw that area. I faught it for 30+ years
