call me silly but I sorta liked the "old town" charm displayed in Mr_Jones photos.
those older homes can really be something when you walk through that front door. Something that families are built around.

I saw those places in downtown lynchburg when we visited in April. Don't let that fool you. I have seen ghetto here in New York. Visit the boroughs in the city and then tell me what lynchburg downtown looks like.
Downtown is older. Like Maryland said- those houses/ buildings have character.
The "newer" parts are just that-newer. There really is something for everyone. We're going to try it for a year and see how goes.
