Hello,

I am considering relocating with my 2 little boys from San Francisco area due to my husband has left us and the high cost of housing.

I am trying to choose a state that is not too cold, and I can buy a home for about $115,000 in a very safe area with homeschooling networks or good school system. I will be living on basic child support, so my finances are not terrific.

Roanke, Virginia and Johnson/Kingsport are two areas that seem promising.

Thanks for any insights, especially anything about homeschooling!

Tina

There are LOTS of homeschooling families, mostly Catholic, in the Front Royal area. It's a little more than an hour from DC. There is a small Catholic college (Christendom) in Front Royal. There is also an extensive homeschooling network in Manassas, home of the Seton School (which has a homeschooling curriculum). Hope this helps.

Northern VA is a pretty expensive area, not sure about roanoke specifically. But my cousin lives in Front Royal and her family loves it. For the money though Tennesee might be a better option to be honest.

Default VA or TN

Tina1234: The Bristol-Kingsport-Johnson City, TN area has lower living costs and milder winters than Roanoke. I am a VA native now living in TN and am very familiar with both areas. Home schooling is a popular option in both.

I live in Front Royal, and there is an extensive home schooling network in this area. It is also a very conservative, religious community, I don't know if that matters to you or not. I will tell you that if you want to buy a house for $115,000, you're probably out of luck in this area. Look at realtor.com in the 22630 zip code for options. There is a large DC commuter population out here, and it's growing as we get more amenities and services. I agree, TN might get you more value for your money.
