Default Renting in Portsmouth VA?

My fiance is stationed in Portsmouth VA. When we are married in May I will be moving there. I have been looking at apartments in and around the Coast Guard Base but everything i seem to read says its a bad area of town. Is that true? Where would you recommend living in or near Portsmouth? We would prefer not to have to commute through the tunnels. I also prefer to not have to lock my doors and stay home at night for fear of getting robbed. I know there is always a possibility of that but less likely in a safer part of town. Any feed back would be appreciated greatly. Thanks

Post this in the Hampton Roads forum for better resposne. Be prepared for lots of negative Portmouth comments. Where do your husband's co workers live ? What do they say ? There are numerous nice communities around. What is your budget ? Check with the Portmouth Police Department. The Portsmouth Police Dept has a place on their website where you can search crime incidents on a specific street. It will only go back 30 days. Put a street name or names from neighborhoods you are considering a see what you find. You can search here by clicking here
Explore ther website further here I don't want to be an alarmist. Every community has crime, we just don't hear about a lot of them..
