I agree. East end newport news probably is the worst section of the state overall (I travel to various areas of the state). The area alone is not very large and usually accounts for about 15-25 murders alone every year as well as a lot of other crime, and frequent gang activity. Check out the crime stats of the area alone. If East End was a seperate city than I'm sure it would be considered one of the most dangerous city's with it's super high crime for population. My brother took a class at criminal justice class that had a lecture based on a housing complex in East End NN. The study found that 75 percent of the residents had reported being robbed in the year. The area also has an uneasy feeling about it (you would have to visit at night to know what I mean). I believe area's of Richmond and Petersburg would rank second overall, and probably places in Norfolk such as Park Place would rank third in the state.

Yeah, but with any city there usually is just 1 section that accounts for a masssive amount of crime. For instance The Highlands in Washington D.C. usually accounts for one third of the city's homicides. I mean southeast alone has around 50-75 murders alone not including the rest of the city. So it would be no suprise that east end would account for allot more crime. Northwest Roanoke is like the only bad area in Roanoke and that area accounts for like all the crime in the city lol.
As a whole, Petersburg is a much poorer area than Newport News and has a MUCH higher crime rate, same with Richmond.

I have to correct my first comment, the lowest homicide rate for Richmond since 1971. (For 2008)
You cant just single out homicides though, if you did that Opa-Locka florida (66.1 per 100,000= 6 murders!) and East Saint Louis, Illinois (30 murders= 101.9 per 100,000) would have the win over Baltimore (over 200 murders) or Philly (400 murders), its just unreasonable to make assumptions about murder rates. (Richmond has on average 70-100 per year it differs year to year.)
You have to look at all other forms of violent crimes though, Robbery, Burglary, Aggravated assault, motor vehicle theft, then you have petty property crime.

I would like to nominate Northwest Roanoke to the forum….
There were 1131 reports of shots fired in Roanoke in 2005, and only a tiny percentage were "written-up" by Roanoke Police as "valid". Northwest Roanoke is roughly a mile or somewhat over a mile long. Most shooting in the city take place in Northwest, so that would calculate something like 2-4 shootings a day. That part of the city had 12 murders in 6 months, there were 16 murders that year however the city doesn’t even meet up to a population of 100,000. Twice in 4 years Roanoke ranked as Virginias second most dangerous city.
On top of it all, according to the “Department of Justice Criminal Services: Virginia Crime Trends 1998-2007” from 1998 to 2007 the violent crime rate declined in all regions of Virginia except the West Central region.
Here’s an interesting article from 2006.
Why is Roanoke so dangerous? - Roanoke.com
Then there is allot of BAD sh*t going on with the police in Roanoke. The police were caught on camera around 2007, with two officers beating the living sh*t out of a man who was handcuffed.
Check out Ronaoke on SpotCrime.

Park place is where the bad people come from that are visiting Ghent. These are the people you wish to avoid.
