My Wife and I have jsut moved form Northern Ireland to the states, we have been living in the New Jersey area for the past few weeks, my company have sent me over from Ireland to work for the next 4-5 years.
They are looking me to relocate to Virginia as my main bulk of work will be here and possibly Maryland.

I am looking for advise on locations on were to possibly move to, We would like to Rent, and keep it below $1100 ( is this possible?)
We would like a nice area as I will be on the road travelling a lot and would like to feel confident that my Wife will be in a safe area. Also as we have only one means of transportation, are there any train networks or good bus networks around?
My company have told me to look around the Ricmond area, Towns such as Glen Allan area and Williamsburg. So basically we want a nice safe area with handy transportation around.

At present we are in a small town called Haddonfield in New Jersey, it has a main street with plenty of shops and is easily walked to from were we are staying. It is very like home in Northern Ireland in a way, shops all in walking distance from the house.
Is the Glen Allen area like this or is there anywere else someone could reccomend?

We are completely new to this whole relocating business and any help anyone can give would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay here. I am not familiar with Glenn Allen at all but lived about 25 miles from Williamsburg for a number of years and really liked Williamsburg. I don't recall any public transportation but many areas are very walk able. It is a very safe area. I would suggest you post this in the Hampton Roads thread also because Williamsburg is in that area and some very knowledgeable posters will answer your questions.

Not sure if you are interested in this but there are some Irish American Societies in some of these areas as well. Here are some links.

Glen Allen is a nice area, but it is nothing like what you mentioned. You have to drive to get anywhere. It's very open and spread out.

Williamsburg is not off of 95 so if that is important to you, I would not consider Williamsburg. You have to take 64 to get there in and particularly in the summer months, that road can be a real pain.
Maybe Fredericksburg might be worth checking out?

I am not really familiar with the area but have been told some parts are similar to what you are looking for. Hopefully someone more familiar will post but if not, you can start a new thread titled Fredericksburg. That may help. There are areas in Northern VA that would fit what you are looking for but not in your price range I don't think.. although, you may be able to find a small apartment In Fairfax that might be close your budget.
