Default Lancaster/Glouster Counties

Dear Locals,

We are interested in purchasing a summer home and have been considering, Lancaster County, Glouster and Gwynn Island. I would be very interested in anyone's comments concerning lifestyle of the region. We are interested in fishing, crabbing and spending time outside - we are not city people, like the outdoors and would like to escape Texas for the summer (plus our son is a Hokie). Is it a friendly area? Are storms a major issue (we survived Rita and Ike - but wouldn't want to experience it again!)

Thank you!

You won't find a friendlier place in Virginia than the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. My inlaws moved to Gloucester and have a nice place on the Ware River right off Mobjack Bay. They moved from Richmond and simply love the area. Gwynns Island in Mathews is a great place as well albeit a little more remote. You did have to watch out for flood zones if you are looking to buy a home. Quite a few areas are very low. Of the three areas Gloucester is the most populated and has the most stores/ businesses. Lancaster is second with Gwynns Island/ Mathews very close to it.
Isabel hit the area pretty hard in 2003. Hard to predict future storms but is pretty much a given at some point there will be more.
All offer a huge variety of waterfront properties at reasonable prices with a great sense of community.
