Heck, I'm from Illinois, now living in the South. Southerners are waaaay friendlier. And it's not an act.

Every time I've heard one of my fellow northerners go off on that kind of argument you just offered, it's almost always because they have the social skills of a grapefruit. Southerners just have a well-defined code of behavior that's embedded in the culture. Learn the rules and they'll treat you like family. On the other hand, act like you're still in Syracuse or Cleveland or Boston, and you will indeed get a cool reception.

I was refused service for the first time in my life at an IHOP in downtown Atlanta (because of race). I wouldn't call that friendly.

Huh. That's weird. I ate at an IHOP in Birmingham, Alabama, last week. It was so integrated, it could have been a Coca Cola commercial.

It's not considered a friendly state because it isn't! The north is much friendlier and also filled with classier people.

Right, that pizza, those cheesesteaks: all low calorie, low-fat food.
Now, why you'd want to cook and eat brothers, I don't know....

I love Virginia. I like Virginians. I've lived here for 20 years. I absolutely believe central Virginia is as close to paradise as we can get. However, I agree that Midwesterners are friendlier. Southerners are polite, kind, but they want to know what people you belong to... like a variation on "what do you do?" Slightly clannish. Midwesterners might not be as polite, but they are much more exuberant in their friendliness. In two meetings, you can have a new good friend. I prefer Southerners anyway, but that's my opinion.
