Im just saying it makes me feel kind of retarted living 1-2 hours away from Tennessee saying I live up north or Mid atlantic or whatever.
Oh, it was nothing against you. Some people just get very worked up and defensive about it. Perhaps Virginia is both Southern and Mid-Atlantic? Southern given its history and geographic location, Mid-Atlantic given it is an Atlantic coastal state approximately midway along the seaboard.

Mid-Atlantic means it has qualities from both sides, but isn't definitively one or the other.

No, im not all crazy about the whole situation like some people, its all good.

Suppose it is a weird mix of both, in Richmond I fell more like im in Memphis or something, same deal with most of central virginia, and central southern? if thats how you would say it?. Hampton Roads are not southern to me in my opinion, they're infamous accent is dying out there same thing seems to be going on in North Carolina. Ive always thought people from the Hampton Roads seemed to have more in common with New York than Richmond. But then most of Northern Virginia it seems more in tune with Philly or Baltimore same with D.C.

It's like the whole state is backwards in allot of ways

Why cant we be both? We are geographically more central, but we are definitely part of the Old South- and really the Upper South. It really is a SOUTHERN state, but regions can overlap each other.

NOVA is definitely not very Southern any more, but I would never say its like Philadelphia. or Baltimore. Its kind of "Southern-Lite".

I grew up in Loudoun County, and we have all these old plantations out that way and foxhunting, and DC seemed a world a way to me. But that was back in the 1980s and 90s.

I've always thought of Virginia as the Mid Atlantic. That should be taken with pride, not an insult. Mid Atlantic in culture means a place where both Northern & Southern cultures have a significant impact on a state. That doesn't mean there's no Southern traits in Virginia. Just that for every Southern trait, there's a Northern one to even it out. What's so wrong with that?

Sometimes I wish the East Coast would take an example from the West Coast, and become unified, despite the differences they may share, instead of this "you're either North or South" crap.

What the heck is Northern about Virginia? I mean, besides the immediate DC area? We talk Southern, eat BBQ, drink sweet tea, we were part of the Old Confederacy, and we have manners.

I never thought of Virginia Mid-Atlantic- at least not culturally if thats what you mean. Its Southern. Like it or leave it.

I bet the poster that you responded to just knows some people either Northern in origin, or who have been trained out of demonstrating "southernness" to strangers. There are a good many original "Northerners" in many parts of Virginia, along with FL and GA, and NC, and maybe other southern places. Why? Because it's nice here!

I'm "midwestern", living here. When I first came, I was totally surprised by how many people identified me as "midwestern" by my accent. They could often even pinpoint the state and *region* I'd lived. I know some transplants, but I know as may or more actual natives. I would definitely say Virginia as a whole is southern. NOVA, maybe not so much

It might be a "class" thing, I think.

Well, I like meeting people from all over. Im not one of those 'get out of my state' yokels. But I do have mixed feelings I guess when people perpetuate stereotypes of a certain region. I only get upset if someone makes fun of Virginia or the South. IMO, every place has its good and bad points.
