Q's BBQ in Midlothian, VA is pretty good. Had some last night.
They've won a lot of awards.

I liked Buz and Neds in Richmond, stopped in on the way to florida shortly after hearing about them in "Throwdown with Bobby Flay". They have a bunch of funny Flay-slayer shirts and stuff. The BBQ was tasty though.
While you're in the blacksburg area, you absolutely have to stop in at "The Homeplace" restaurant in Catawba/Salem, about 30 minutes north of Blacksburg. I've never been to their BBQ nights (thursday evenings), but have heard good things about it. I loved their regular nights though (fri-sun, they're only open on weekends), it's amazing country cooking. You sit down, and immediately are given bowls and plates of all-you-can-eat roast beef, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, ham, sweet tea, lemonade. It's so simple, but awesome. I consider myself to be a bit of a food snob, and eat at a lot of nicer restaurants when out - Homeplace is still one of my favorites because it's just good filling food, sorta like thanksgiving whenever you want. So try Homeplace.

Once again I agree with Eric D. In Fredericksburg Alman's is great. Personally I like the North Carolina sauce they have. I still remember my first visit there... there was a sign on the kitchen door that said "Mama's Kitchen"... after a bit a lady walked out and the guy behind the counter said "Mama...." Cracked me up!
Now, in Chester we just tried Sibley's, which all of the locals rave about. It was very good. Again, I'm partial to North Carolina sauce. Three adult meals and a kids meal and we got out of there for about $22 (not including tip).

Only one person mentioned pulled pork, and there might have been one mention of ribs. Fact is, though, that people have many different perceptions of what barbecue actually is. Do the places that are mentioned offer a variety of meats, or do they serve you something swimming in a red sauce?

I think Pierce's BBQ is great too. I always thought Bill's BBQ in Richmond was the best, but after Pierec'es I have seen the light !

If you're in the Northern Shenandoah Valley, the best BBQ is Big Daddy's on Warrior Dr. in Stephens City (about 10 miles south of Winchester).

Pigs - R - Us (aka Checkered Pig BBQ).
1014 Liberty Street
Martinsville, VA 24112
I went about a year ago and it is fantastic
If I understand it correctly, Pigs-R-Us is the name of the restaurant but "Checkered Pig" is their competition name that they use when they go to BBQ competitions and out on the road.
They were featured on Food Network and they won [SIZE=2]Best in the West Rib cook-off in Reno, VA
I ate at the restaurant and was satisfied, but from what I was told by other patrons, their competition meats are even better so I guess I have to catch them at a show sometime.
Checkered Pig Barbecue Restaurant, featuring award winning barbecue sauce, with catering, pick up and delivery (you can check out some of the awards there).
But, alas, I am in Richmond now, I will have to check out all of the Richmond places you guys mentioned.
