The main reason why I think Virginia has a northern feel to it, is because of all the excessive laws they have there, once you enter into Virginia there is a barrage of signs telling you what is illegal there. Example--- "Welcome to VA, radar detectors illegal, speeding controlled by vascar, no littering, and the list goes on and on. I remember the first time I crossed into VA it almost made me paranoid with all of the laws there. So in that respect it has more in common with the northeast, than the laid back south.

ah never thought of it like that, good observation.

The no cursing signs in Virginia Beach are something else though.

It can snow in ANY part of the South. Even the Deep South. Especially in the mountains.

It doesnt snow EVERY winter in Virginia. There have been winters even when I was in NOVA that we didnt get any snow.

I dont know any people from the Deep South who have a problem with Virginia being South . I do know some will leave out NOVA. And thats fine.

You are making sweeping generalizations.

Many young people in Virginia do not have very strong Southern accents- but thats true nearly ALL OVER THE SOUTH.

If Virginia turns Mid-Atlantic, then so will the Carolinas.

I was in Rocky Mount NC just the other night and that area is NO DIFFERENT than the Richmond-Petersburg area. A few more Bojangles, but even the accents are similar.

I find it laughable that people from the Carolinas would make those comments. They're so dang close!

LOL.
Whatever!

That is the silliest thing I have ever heard. I have been up North and I dont see any correlation between that and "northern".

Try harder.

Well here's to one more liberal Yankee whack job invading your Southern turf in a few months when I relocate to Virginia! Unlike most in the BosWash Corridor though I was actually raised to hold doors, to use turn signals, to say "please", "thank you", and "excuse me", and to greet everyone with a friendly smile or wave. You can take the "valley boy" out of Scranton, but you can't take the Scranton out of the valley boy! LOL!

Silly or not, that was my perception at the time and it stuck. Down south is known for being more relaxed with laws, while up north everything is regulated to the hilt. To me the south represents the total opposite of the nanny state concept.

Wait till you hear about our gun laws and then it might change your mind about VA being Northern

Really I think it's because more people from different areas are moving in so it doesn’t seem southern really (Northern Virginia). When you look at the architecture and so forth Virginia certainly rubs off southern.

Check out these pics.

Fredericksburg

Now let’s do a comparison, with some other areas in the census defined south.

Lexington Kentucky

Western Kentucky

Mobile, AL

Natchez, Mississippi

Columbia SC

Charleston SC
