Begging for advice on relocation for the lower-middle class!

My wife and I are leaving a basically rural and impovershed area of the country to relocate to Hampton Roads. We are essentially starting over. After a failed business has left us bankrupt, a Chesapeake company has offered me a $45,000 salary, and my wife plans to attend ODU.

Housing in Hampton Roads is incredibly expensive, compared to where we're coming from. We currently rent a large 2 bedroom apt. for $425 per month.

Learning from our past financial mistakes, we want to live FAR BELOW what we can afford when we relocate. Where can we move within decent commuting distance between ODU and Chesapeake OR where can we live NEXT to ODU (within a short public transportation or walking distance) so we can get by with just one vehicle?

I can obviously afford $1000 per month but we want to avoid going that high. Can we get anything in the $500-$700 range? We have a small dog, so that is a factor. Will our bad credit history prohibit us from living ANYWHERE in the area? Most apartments, we noticed, require credit checks.

We've been told Ghent is a good place to live, but we can't figure out where that is. I know its in Norfolk but apartment guides don't really outline the street names and zip codes covered by Ghent. In any case, living next to ODU might be a better option for us. Is that a long drive to Chesapeake?
