I am not speaking of Richmond but Virginia as a whole. Who says she has to send her kids to Richmond city schools? I am getting my weather information from Weatherunderground. I am 3 hours away from Richmond so not sure how it "feels" and your right its not from stepping outside but in Roanoke which is typically cooler it feels pretty comfortable. Not here to argue really just trying to give real, true advice. Take care

I don't know anyone who would let their kids go to the schools here if they didn't have to. Her kids are in their teens, and will have to go to Richmond City schools!

note the attitude "if you don't like it LEAVE" because that's the city's solution to everything. btw I AM leaving.

I think Virginia is a great place to live if you dont then maybe you should think of moving out of this great state! I never said Va is like Florida weather.. It's not its Va.! I live in Roanoke its 62 at my apartment right now and I am wearing a short sleeve shirt.. am I cold? No. My parents live in Richmond and it is currently 55..! I went out and ran some errands and no one was wearing a jacket that is insane to think you need a jacket when its in the 50's or 60's. And did you see the forecast for the rest of the week???? 70's to near 85!! And Va is a great place to raise kids.. So like I said dont spread neg. things about Va just because you arnt happy here.. Leave!!
I said that was a horrible post, I dont know your posting history and dont care..I never said I didnt think VA was great, VA is very versatile, when did I say I didnt like it?..In Newport News its chilly, windy and raining so yes we are wearing jackets...VA does have a good spots to raise kids, but once again you quoted me wrong, I said Richmond, and it ISNTa good place fro children..Its been in the most dangerous cities list top 5 or near top 5 for the last couple of years..you DONT want you child attendin school in that city or being raised there ..I also wasnt spreading negative, I was giving her the truth, obviously no one wants to be tricked into coming into a state because some posters have too much pride give the pros AND CONS of where they live. Bottomline, she stated her reason for coming to VA was for weather, and im trying to show her there are much better places if your sole reason is "weather"..This place has hurricanes (weak ones, but hurricanes nonetheless), The Solstices dominate the Equinox's (long summers and winters) Extrmemly humid Summers (which she probably isnt use to), The Winters are mild, but not so much, 30's and 40's on an everyday basis isnt necessarily "mild" and many days it does hit below freezing (especially at night), even some snow..I would think someone from CT would want to get away from that all-together thats why I was reffering her to somewhere down south..Dont turn me into some "basher" when Im really just trying to help her find her best destination, your so busy trying to act like a Virginia salesman. Your not even puttin any care for the person into your advice (or "sales pitch")..And that was obvious when you sent her to Richmond city with children..hence why I said "horrible post" in the first place..

When did I send her Richmond city? I never did that. I said Richmond which dosnt nessasarly mean Richmond city. So you are quoting me wrong. And I am not a Va salesman, I know that Va isnt perfect but no place is. And to be honest part of my reason to move to Roanoke from Richmond was for less crime so yes Richmond has plenty of crime. I NEVER told her to live in Richmond city especially with children. There are wonderful neighborhoods all around Richmond with wonderful schools that I would be proud to send my kids to (If I had them) And Im sorry its rainy and windy there.. the sun is shining with wind here in Roanoke but none than less just a great Va. day! I am sorry you misread my post. You should go back and read it.

Having just stepped back inside, you're crazy if you're wearing a winter coat here (Richmond). It's 55 degrees here...

When people come from places that don't have Virginia's independent city system, saying they want to live in a decent "city" isn't necessarily the same to them. Places like Mechanicsville, Midlothian, and the Glen Allen areas of Richmond would fit the bill of "decent cities" with great schools. And if private school is a preference then parts of the City would be a fine choice. Perhaps the original poster could clarify?

Winters in Virginia are cold but certainly not like Connecticut. Summers hot and humid, just like much of the south. Usually, when I'm tired of the heat or cold, spring/fall are starting to arrive. I like having 4 distinct seasons.

Back to the OP...I'm Henrico/Hanover County born and raised, and I think that the counties outside of Richmond are a great place to raise kids! Wouldn't recommend downtown Richmond, but the rest of it is pretty nice. And no, the winters in VA/Richmond are nothing like the north. I'm in Philadelphia for college, and I can't stand it up here.

You're not even in Richmond.. Also OP said she has teenagers. Are you going to seriously suggest the Richmond school system??
