Decent cities in Virginia
Hello Everyone,
My husband and I are considering moving to Virginia because the weather is nicer. We live in CT, We are looking to find out what are decent cities in Virginia to live in? and also raise two daughters ages 12 & 14 -I would appreciate any input you might have.
Thank you!

If your coming to Virginia in hopes of avoiding cold weather, your going to be highly dissapointed. It's no CT but its definitely cold enough, everyone I know down here from up-north even says the same thing. It's April 21st and were stil having cold days here and there, while my friend in TX brags to me about high 80's/lower 90's right now.
If you just have to come to Virginia, I would say VA Beach then Chesapeake second, you and your kids would probably enjoy it.

In addition to all this you've probably never lived in "real heat" on an everyday basis, VA is in humid subtropical section of the US, so Humidity gets so bad in the Summer, it can be hard to breathe. VA and good weather are not synonyms by any means, dont know what gave you that idea, I mean there are worse places in the country but hey, you will see.

Yeah I'm richmond for 21 years. STILL wearing my winter coat even today. Summer time can be so hot it is typical for seniors and babies to have to stay inside most of the time. It is crazy. As you can see also the seasons often over lap.

Dont let these people fool you.. Va has great weather!
Wow you guys crack me up! Winter coats? Cold days in April? Give me a break! I am a Virginia Native (born and raised in Richmond now living in Roanoke) and I honestly think you are midleading the OP. Now I will say that Va weather is strange. One weekend in March or April will be 70 deg then the next will be in the 50's. But today in Richmond for example its in the mid 60's, much too warm for a winter coat. I agree Va can have its cold days in the winter but that is what the winter is all about. Va has its seasons and thats what makes it so wonderful. I could never live in a place without its distinct four seasons (winter, spring, summer and fall). My adivice to the OP is that Va. weather is actually much warmer than Ct. but will never have the weather that Texas has if I wanted to live in Texas weather I would live in Texas! I honestly dont like 80-90 deg days in April (even though this weekend is in the 80's!) Now as for the summer it does get very hot and muggy here but it dosnt last that long, I would say 2-3 months of the year. Move to Va. and enjoy all it has to offer including great weather! Its hard for me to pin-point one particular city for you since there are many wonderful ones to live in here. If you like the fast paced life check out Northern Va. ie: fairfax, arlington, ect. For a more laid back atmosphere check out Roanoke, friendly folks, great school systems, and a very good cost of living. Or for a mix of the two Richmond. If you have any more questions feel free to Private Message me. Have a good day!

Wwhat are you talking about???
"But today in Richmond for example its in the mid 60's, much too warm for a winter coat."
um no actually it is in the mid 50s and it is raining. Yes you do need a winter coat unless you're crazy. It does not seem like VA has seasons anymore it is either hot or cold, I have not seen spring/fall in a year or two.

Horrible post, why would you send a person with children to Richmond?..Last year heat started in May and didnt end til the beginning of October, more like 3-4 months of humidity..Also, why would you lie and act like VA is Florida or somethin? Like Winter weather only shows up a few days here n there through the Winter months? lies? It will never be 60 in the winter like it is down south, thats why I think she has VA confused, her location might be more south..Because it does get quite cold here, go look up the number of days we had under 32 degrees, and guess what? it even snows periodically

Yea I have no idea what she is talknig about, Im in Newport News and I have on a coat, and its a little cooler there and NoVa. And you are 100% correct on Fall/Spring, we have them but in two weeks there dominated by the upcoming season. Last year after it being so hot, I was so excited about fall coming, but it was like it never came, October hit and I was still outside sweating. A few cool weeks, then the cold hit.

I am a he thank you. I am not a horrible poster I have helped many on these boards. I think Virginia is a great place to live if you dont then maybe you should think of moving out of this great state! I never said Va is like Florida weather.. It's not its Va.! I live in Roanoke its 62 at my apartment right now and I am wearing a short sleeve shirt.. am I cold? No. My parents live in Richmond and it is currently 55..! I went out and ran some errands and no one was wearing a jacket that is insane to think you need a jacket when its in the 50's or 60's. And did you see the forecast for the rest of the week???? 70's to near 85!! And Va is a great place to raise kids.. So like I said dont spread neg. things about Va just because you arnt happy here.. Leave!!

Actually it is barely 50 degrees now, cloudy, windy and it is still rainy.. which is really making it colder. Not sure where you're getting your weather source from but it's not from stepping outside. And besides the school system is not exactly the best or safest here. I don't know anyone who would let their kids go to the schools here if they didn't have to. Her kids are in their teens, and will have to go to Richmond City schools!
note the attitude "if you don't like it LEAVE" because that's the city's solution to everything. btw I AM leaving.
