My husband and I and our 1-year-old daughter are moving to the area and need some help on narrowing down where to live. We are looking into Alexandria or south of Alexandria in Fairfax county. What areas are safe and not too expensive. Is it too long to have to go over the bridge to Andrews or is the construction done? Do you think Woodbridge is too far? What kind of a commute would my husband be looking at everyday? Thanks for you help.

The areas around Andrews aren't the greatest so I agree with not living there. I grew up not far from Andrews and I wouldn't live there now. But, the problem with living in Alexandria is the commute. Once you get across the Woodrow Wilson bridge and past 295, the drive shouldn't be too bad to Andrews. Getting out of Alexandria and past 295 will be where the traffic is. South of Alexandria you're talking a longer commute. For Alexandria (south), Kingstowne, a planned community, would be the safest area that I can think of. I personally prefer Virginia to MD, even though I spent most of my growing up years in MD. Taxes are lower and so is crime, but have you considered MD at all? Andrews just isn't in the best location for commuting. The construction on the bridge is not completely done as far as I know, but should be close. There are delays for several construction projects in the area also. Once again, if you want safest in this area (as well as a decent commute), you have to be willing to pay for it.
