Default National Cherry blossoms festival

We are planning to go see the cherry blossoms in Wash D.C. this weekend (Saturday, April 7th). I understand there is a prelude to fireworks show follwed by the freworks on that day. I would like some advise from the local experts about good locations to see both the show and the fireworks.

Also, are there any activities/shows that are not to be missed on Saturday?

Some one said all the blossoms will be gone by Saturday and there is really nothing to do! What a party pooper!
My oblivious 4 year old is excited about the whole thing. I would appreciate some suggestions and tips from folks who have done this before.

TIA

The best time for this years blossoms was this past week. They are past peak and it's getting cold as we speak. It's windy right now and most of them will blow away with it. The temps are going to be in the 40's this weekend. That with the possibility of freezing at night, you have missed the gorgeous blossoms of last weekend. No one's being a party pooper, just telling the truth. There are fireworks Sat night, but it's gonna be cold. The weather reports are all saying it'll be colder on Easter than Christmas was this year. There might some blossoms left, but with the wind we're having tonight and the rain earlier today, a lot should be gone by Sat.

Aarrgh. Thanks for the heads up on the weather. I am a hardy New Englander. We were out for the New Years party fireworks with temps in the 30s. Bright side, maybe the cold weather will keep the multitude of tourists away.

Yes, the weather could dampen tourist enthusiasm along with everything else. For the bound and determined, however, the southwest waterfront (primarily along Maine Avenue) will host not only the fireworks, but also a three-hour kid-friendly entertainment program Saturday starting at 5:00 pm. Music, crafts, food, and probably miscellaneous tacky stuff as well, but since you may have the entire area to yourselves, it might be worth it to take advantage of the situation. Good luck! I'm not from New England...I'll be home sitting in front of a nice warm fire watching on TV...
