Hello all, My name is Bill. My family and I have been seriously considering a move to VA. I cant afford to live in NY ant more. I have a good County job, but we still cant make ends meet. We pay $2,195 a month just on rent alone. I am taking the Henrico Police Exam in May. Can a family of 5 make it in VA? Please let me know. Thank you guys.

The cost of living in the Richmond area is much lower than it is in New York. Henrico is nice... good schools, parks, infrastructure, shopping, etc and depending on what you want to live in, you can DEFINITELY find a cheaper rent than that...
What are you looking for? We'll try to offer some good advice. Good luck. |

Cost of living is lower, but so are salaries. A police officer doesn't make a huge salary and while you can rent a house for less than $2195/month, but your income will also be lower.

Hopefully one would research prevailing salaries before applying to a job in an area, but you are correct.

My daughter is interested in living in Norfolk to be near her boyfriend, who is in the navy. Some advice or comments would be most welcome.

Kathleen54, Norfolk is not close to Richmond so you may get more info by starting a new post with your questions. There are some great areas in Norfolk but some to be very careful about as well so I think so who know the area will see your question better on a new thread.

To bill11312.....yes, Richmond is a good choice after NY. The area has a lot of opportunities(employment wise). It is close to the beach, DC, mountains, etc. Also, another great spot for you to look at is Wilmington, NC. For some reason there is a huge group of ex-New Yorkers who live there along the North Carolina coast. I have a friend who moved here to VA from NYC and I couldn't believe how many people she knew in Wilmington who left NY!!
Good Luck! |

Bill , check out a community called Ladysmith Village its not in Henrico, but next to it in Caroline county, a great new development designed for families, a elem. school, library, playgrounds, walking trails, a planned community center, shops and YMCA,

Henrico=>Hanover=>Caroline
There are several similar developments closer to Richmond is that's your preference... many already established and award-winning (i.e. Woodlake, Brandermill, etc) |

Ladysmith Village does seem like a very nice, balanced development though. It should be something that Caroline County would be wise to grow around.
