I think the worst county in VA, in terms of the people in it, is Wythe county. It is where I-77 and I-81 converge. The people here think that they are the only good people in the country and that anyone not from here is trash. They have an attitude towards "outsiders" where they think "We're good country people, good Christians, who can be trusted. All you are is big city trash that probably never even set foot inside a church. I wouldn't put anything past you }:^( "
And another thing, there's that old expresion; "You can judge a people by the way it treats it's children." Well, out of all the counties in the state of Virginia, in 2006, Wythe county was the number 2 county for child abuse and neglect. So, what do you think that says about these people?
Compared to this county, I'll take Page county any day.

Wow! I hope you don't live in Wythe County. If you do no wonder you are miserable. Like any county anywhere in the country, you have the good places and not so good places. For those of you who don't live in Wythe, a bit of defense. Wythe is a small extremely rural county full of families who have lived here for generations and generations. These people went to school together and still live close to each other. They live close to their parents and grandparents. Not sure who compiled the statisics on child abuse but from what I've seen family values are very strong here as well as instilling Christian values (whether they actually go to church or not). Are they welcoming to outsiders? Well, not exactly. That takes time and you have to just be patient and be yourself. They don't take too kindly to people coming in demanding change. To be honest, they like things just the way they are. Is there anything so wrong with that???
These are hard-working people most of whom do some sort of Physical labor. Jobs are extremely hard to come by here and are disappearing south of the border on a daily basis. Most don't have fancy cars or houses. The "things" they do have you can't put a price tag on. They enjoy family and friends and don't judge anyone based on how many figures their income is.
These people will give you the shirt off their backs though. When a local family gets burned out of their house, within a week, they have a place to live, clothes on their back and the necessities of starting a home again. It's not the Red Cross that shows up. It's their neighbors.
The schools are adequate, they do the best with what they have and the teachers here teach because that is what they love. They sure don't make any money at it! The healthcare system sucks but that's a whole other thread.
I'm in the process of moving but only because I'm in search of warmer winters and more opportunities. It's a mellow beautiful place to live and bring up a family. Unfortunately those things just don't pay the bills.
