Based on where we've visited so far, ie, we haven't been west of Richmond, I vote for Richmond.

I was going to say Harrisonburg--not the entire valley, though.

They only started "liking" Patsy after she hit it big....and they're still trying to cash in on her name to this day.

Phonies...

Richmonder, why don't you just come out bluntly and admit that you dislike Eastern Northern Virginia already? You've been tap-dancing around saying it ever since you starting actively participating in our forum.

As an outsider who moved to the Roanoke area (the rural outskirts of it), my take is that for a visitor, Roanoke is among the friendliest places I've ever been to. In fact, because so many people hold the door for others or that pedestrians wave at drivers who pause for them are why I moved out here in the first place. There is a very nice Southern charm that permeates even the most unexpected places in this area.

However, if you're relocating here permanently, that's where I feel your comment about them being "almost suspicious of outsiders" fits in. I'm not going to speculate as to why that is, but there are some barriers that I've seen people have to break down to get interviews or advancements in the workplace. You definitely have to work to earn longterm trust here.

And, for the record, I haven't met a single person here who identifies themself with the areas north of Roanoke. While this isn't officially coal-country, it's blue-collar roots are soo deep that the region's heart lay with those similar counties to the southwest.

I lived for 30 years in SWVA and while I think people there are quite friendly I find Roanokers to be even friendlier.
