Default First time driver, DMV question

Im over 18 but i do not have any type of driver's license. I plan on getting one but do i have to take a class or can i just go up to DMV and take my test?

There is this one class with the price tag about $280.. our school is over crowded so i couldnt take mines there but my friend did and he only had to pay $60. I just am not sure what to do I've spent 2 hours on hold thanks to DMV so I'm asking elsewhere. I don't have a permit or anything.. Do I need one? Can someone PLEASE clear this up for me.

u do need to get a permit for a certain amt of time b4 ur eligible for a license. i would recommend taking the class b/c if u do that and are 18 they will waive the road test and will just give you ur license. i jus got mine and i'm 18 so when i gave them the driving school form they just gave me my license. but i had my permit since i was 15 so they didn't give me that much garbage about it.
