Staunton and it's surrounding areas ARE, in general, inexpensive.... Staunton or Fishersville both seem pretty affordable..

There are some interesting, affordable, and easily accessible areas in and around Staunton as I-81 goes right through there. My leaning would be toward the area between Staunton and Lexington, depending on the kind of lifestyle you're after, commute you want, and your price range.

I need info on Staunton
I would like to relocate from Florida to the Staunton area with my family. I was thinking of moving to Staunton (but not neccesarily within city limits) to start an antique bussiness. Staunton seems to have an excellent economic base, is it friendly to small business owners? Any other info on the area you could provide would be much appreciated.

Staunton is nice,...and does have a very artsy, eclectic feel to it. Keep in mind though, that there are ALOT of 'antique' shops around. Every little rural town in Va seems to have a few artsy little antique shops,.....so be prepared for some competition.
Another area about 40minutes north of Staunton is Luray. It is a good tourist base due to the the DC folks having their mountain cabins there. Good restaurants, art galleries..etc..etc. From a business POV, I would think Luray might be better,....more people with disposable income.

Thank you Dr. Jim. I am wondering what the housing prices in Luray are like,..reasonable? I am actually thinking of buying outside of town on a major road to attract clientele (but also to get some of that fresh country air,) and to be able to buy a few more acres than I could in town for the same price. Any thoughts on this..Oh, are there many decent auctioneers/auction houses in the area that you know of? ( I havn't been able to find much info on auctioneers/auctions in the area)

My wife and I were looking seriously at buying a home in Luray because the prices are pretty affordable. However the school system is pretty suspect so that was kind of a deal-killer for us.

When I was looking, I was only looking for mountain homes of a specific type, so I am unfamiliar with overall real estate pricing.
As far as buying on a major road,...there are not that many 'major roads' to choose from.
Alot of what you will see traveling down some of the more popular 2 lane 'major roads' will be large farms and such. There will be some smaller properties bordering the towns though. And don't forget that most of that land will be zoned agricultural, not B2 (business).
Not familiar with auction houses. But again, plenty of antiquing around.
