Please, Please, Please help with Williamsburg Questions!!! (Norfolk: hotel, price)

My Boyfriend and I are planning on going to Williamsburg for a week, but I literally know very little about that area of VA.
I found some Motels on Pinpoint Travel, and they seeemed extremely reasonably priced, around 40.00 a night for the dates in August we plan on going.
However, I'm a little unsure of safety. Is the "Historic Area" of Williamsburg
(Second street, York street, etc) safe?
I'm from TN and 40.00 a night for a hotel seems extremely cheap, so I'm not sure if that's because it's dangerous, ghetto-ish, etc.

Where in the Williamsburg/Norfolk/Coastal area could we stay for less than 60.00 a night, THATS SAFE?

I have been vacationing in Williamsburg since I was little and I can't remember any areas, esp. in the tourist areas, that are dangerous. Williamsburg is a nice area all around, the historic area especially. We were just there in April and it was just as nice as it always is. I've never felt unsafe there myself, even walking around alone.
