Default Where in VA is the cost of living the lowest, yet a lot of jobs?

Hi.
Thinking of moving to VA, I need to be where ever it is in VA that is CLOSEST to North Carolina (specifically Fayetteville, NC). I need it to be where their are JOBS and affordable living (an apartment around $500-$700). I searched a little bit, and it seems like its VERY expensive there. Is this true? I couldn't find an apartment under $1,000 a month!
Any advise is appreciated.
thanks

Thank you for the info. Do you live in that area? Do you happen to know of any places you could recommend in NC? I am undecided between VA and NC. Keep in mind I would like to be no more than 2 hours away from Fayetteville, NC. That's my PREFERENCE anyway! I am open to other possibilities too though. I definately need to move where the cost of living isn't expensive and their would be JOBS! I know jobs are scarse everywhere, but I need the place I choose to at least be building up not down. Husband does construction (painting) etc.... I can work anywhere but my field preferably is office work in the medical field.
Thanks a bunch.

I am undecided between VA and NC and possibly even GA. Keep in mind I would like to be no more than 2 hours away from Fayetteville, NC. That's my PREFERENCE anyway! There is no place in VA where you can reach Fayetteville NC in two hours or less so if the 2 hour rule is something you wont flex on the state of VA is out

As stated, the closest in Virginia with jobs will be at least 3 hours away from Fayetteville. Danville is about 3, Suffolk, Norfolk, Va Beach area 3.5 or more. Manassas?? Out of the question.

And if you have to be within 2 hours driving distance, how could you consider Georgia? Isn't there anywhere in NC that fits the bill for jobs and housing you can afford? For example:

Charlotte Apartment Listings - Houses for Rent in Charlotte

Wilmington Apartment Listings - Houses for Rent in Wilmington
